Derek during his Columbus Clippers Triple-A years
One of my favorite things about Derek getting his 3,000th hit was his teammates reaction to it. And there was no better reaction then Jorge’s. The mutual love and respect these players have for one another is really special. They are teammates, best friends, brothers. This was my favorite moment of the DJ3K HBO special, no one was getting in Jorge’s way to be the first one to greet Derek at home plate. In honor of Jorge’s impending retirement, thank you Jorge.

Minka: When I met Derek, I didn’t know anything about baseball. At all.
Derek: She’s lying. She had a poster of me on her wall when she was in high school! She claims she didn’t know who I was or anything about the Yankees.. No I’m just playing. She really didn’t know a thing about baseball.
Minka: I mean I didn’t know the difference between a run and a home run. I thought if you made a connection with the ball that was an automatic hit.
Derek: You know I’d come home and she’d be happy and say you got four hits. What are you talking about? What were you watching?! She’s learned a lot but my dad deserves all the credit for that cause he had to deal with her lack of baseball knowledge. But now she knows what’s going on.

Interviewer: It’s fun to watch you play with Robinson Cano. But to see you on the field it looks like you’ve formed a friendship. What kind of relationship do you have with him on and off the field?
Derek: I can’t stand Robbie…..Naw I’m just playin. It’s been fun to watch him since he came up. You know Robbie has improved year in and year out. Last year he got a lot of attention for the year he had at the plate and on the field. He’s improved a lot these past years. It’s been fun getting to know him and play with.
